Sakura Kinomoto es una joven de 10 años común y corriente que vive con su padre (Fujitaka Kinomoto) y su hermano (Touya Kinomoto). Un día escucha uno ruidos extraños en la biblioteca de su casa y decide ir a investigar. Su pesquisa la lleva hasta un libro llamado "The Clow", lo abre y descubre que dentro del libro hay unas extrañas cartas. Lee la primera (The windy) y conjura al viento que dispersa el resto de las cartas.
Cuando sale de su sorpresa hace aparición el guardián de las cartas Clow, Kerberos (Kero-chan), un león con aspecto de oso de felpa que culpa a Sakura del accidente y la nombra Cardcaptor, a partir de este momento, Sakura tiene que recuperar todas las cartas para evitar que la magia liberada cause problemas.
