Phyllis Hyman was an American soul singer who became the singers' singer, winning accolades from her peers including Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack.

Her promise showed early when she won a scholarship to a music school as a child. After graduation, she spent several years touring and singing with various bands until she was signed to Roadshow Records in 1975. Her first appearance on vinyl was as a vocalist on Norman Connors' 1976 album, You Are My Starship. Her debut album was Phyllis Hyman (1977) but her first Top Ten hit did not come until 1981, when "Can't We Fall In Love Again" hit the charts. By this time she was acting and singing in the Broadway show Sophisticated Ladies. She continued to release well-received albums throughout the 1980s but by the next decade their mood was increasingly somber as she struggled with her personal life. Her last album, I Refuse To Be Lonely was released in the November of 1995; but by then her troubles had overtaken her and she had killed herself in the June. (amazon)
