Contiene 55 filtros, entre los que cabe destacar el 'Detail Extractor' y el 'Dark Contrasts', dos nuevos efectos que permiten recuperar detalle de manera asombrosa.
En esta versión, el Color Efex permite apilar varios filtros en capas y controlar las opacidades, entre otras mejoras y novedades.
Nik Color Efex 4.0 adapta el efecto a aplicar a los detalles estructurales de la imagen, como al detalle, al color general y específico de la imagen o al rango de contraste de la misma. Gracias a ello, el resultado final queda mucho más integrado con la imagen original, sin producirse sensación de superposición, lo que significa un aspecto mucho más suave y natural. Además, los filtros pueden aplicarse de forma seguida y correlativa en una misma imagen, con lo que pueden potenciarse muchos aspectos de la misma (por ejemplo, potencia el cielo con un filtro degradado azul y mejorar la saturación mediante un filtro polarizante.
